Sports and Specialism Day. Healthy Body, Healthy World!

Following the success of last year’s Sports and Specialism Day Greenhead again celebrated a day of creative recycling, environmental awareness and sporting achievement.

Year 7 students threw themselves into a project to create a recycled sports personality, turning piles of boxes and plastic containers into life size sculptures of Amir Khan, Lewis Hamilton, Ronaldhinho and Rafael Nadal.

Year 8 aspired to join the fashion world, producing t-shirts that promoted environmental issues and completed outfits made entirely from recycled materials. Year 9 students had the opportunity to design an energy efficient school producing models to rival any team of architects with carefully researched planet saving features.

Students also took time out of the activities to compete in their annual Sports Day, where each year group compete within their forms, so it is a fantastic opportunity  for them to bond as a team.

Despite the rain the event was a huge success on this occasion, taking place inside with an array of different activities: Speed Bounce, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot-put, Javelin, Target Throw, 25m Sprint and an Assault Course. The winning forms were 7PHA, 8JAR and 9CS.

Enterprise Day at Greenhead.

This was our first whole school Enterprise Day, designed to embed enterprise into the whole school amongst students, parents, staff and the wider community, as well as giving students an early taste of work.

At Greenhead we want to give our students an innovative and challenging learning experience and a chance to work with employers to develop skills and  confidence for the years ahead. Many guests were invited to the event, including school governors and benefactors, Keighley town councillors, the Mayor Amjad Zaman, MP Anne Cryer and Councillor Kris Hopkins.

Year 7 were involved in the Hospitality and Catering. On the day they cooked all the food for pupils, staff and guests to an Italian theme. They also decorated the school hall, dressed the tables with flower arrangements and produced menus. Students not only cooked but took on the role of waiters and served our guests while others swapped places with the dinner ladies for the day, serving pupils and staff.

Year 8 took part in “Just In Time Business Simulation Challenge” where they worked in teams to emulate a manufacturing company. They worked together on a production line to produce their goods efficiently and effectively in the face of tough competition from the other teams. For the rest of the day they were involved in “Earthquake Rescue”, where students worked on team exercises planning a rapid response  programme in the wake of an earthquake and designed earthquake proof towers.

Year 9 worked with Link Telecom, Bradford University and the Star Centre from Keighley College in different projects all related to space and telecommunication.

Year 10 received an insight into personal finance and job opportunities ahead of their work experience fortnight. They worked with Young Enterprise gaining knowledge through role-play simulations and life games.
