CHALLENGE is Greenhead's scheme for stretching it's more able and talented students. There are identified groups in all year groups. It's aim is to ensure that these students are recognized by teachers and by the students themselves and that strategies are then put in place to bring out their potential. Many of these strategies involve considering how we manage our teaching and learning. For instance our CHALLENGE students are encouraged to learn more independently which in turn requires them to understand how they learn. They are also excepted to think more critically and with evaluation.
CHALLENGE has a high profile within school with notice boards recognizing the achievements and interests of the students. All staff know which students are in the CHALLENGE cohorts and are required to stretch the students.
The scheme shows year on year success with the students not only adding value to their target grades but actually adding more value than other students do.
Some of the successful strategies that we use at Greenhead are:
- Organizing activities with local universities that raise aspirations and awareness.
- Getting students to complete individual learning styles profiling that provides them with a comprehensive picture of their own learning preferences.
- Grading the students more regularly than the rest of the school to help them drive themselves forward.
- Organizing events with more able students from local schools.
- Ensuring that the most able students join NAGTY the National Association for Gifted and Talented Youth.
- Working closely with parents to raise awareness as to how they can support their child's progress.
