Foundation

Foundation was formed in order to help Yr 7 in the transition from primary to secondary school.  Students have 10 lessons a week with the same teacher (for most this teacher is also the form tutor).  This consistency helps the students to build confidence and settle in quickly and easily.

In September 2006, the Foundation course was changed to give a higher focus on literacy and in particular the enjoyment of reading.

The course is taught through three themed schemes of work:

  • Term 1 - ‘Me, Myself and My Community’
  • Term 2 – ‘Living in Our World’
  • Term 3 – ‘Making a Difference’

The Foundation team believes that experience is an integral part of learning and as such each term has at least one trip which supports the topic being studied.  Theatre groups and other visitors are also invited in to support the curriculum.

This year, another new initiative has been introduced to the school through Foundation – ‘Learning to Learn’.  Through a variety of sessions and topics, the students learn the key concepts of ‘reason, resilience, responsibility, reflection and resourcefulness’ and how these can help their ability to learn.

Year 7 visit to Children's University Enterprise Day, Bradford Bulls Stadium

A group of 10 year 7 students visited the Bradford Bulls stadium in Bradford to take part in the Children's University Enterprise Challenge Day on Thursday 12th June 2008.  The day gave students an insight into the business world and  focused on the import and export trade between countries as well as being an enjoyable day of activities.  Students took part in a variety of activites which included looking at how far food travels to get to the UK, developing a new eco-friendly product and learning all about trading.
