Year 10's visit to the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds
Much fun was had by all, and that includes the first hour when we were hopelessly lost in Leeds! When we finally arrived at the museum, we were immediately confronted by some rather too realistic reconstructions of early C19th streets. They were just as disgusting as we had imagined when we studied Public Health in Year 9. We all enjoyed the activities based around 'health care' and the cures that were available 150 years ago. Thankfully no-one believed that riding a donkey would ever cure whooping cough but Mrs Carrieri does believe that ginger and cayenne are effective medicines for colds and the 'flu... she still uses them!
Mohammed Oly was the first to experience what food feels like when it enters the human mouth!
Nathan was made aware of just how much he weighed when his mum was pregnant with him...
Some of us were so impressed that we would like to visit the museum again. Unfortunately the next outing for Year 10 is an archaeological trip to Ilkley Moor, when we will definitely be following a route map...!
Some other photographs of the visit
This year has seen some new and exciting changes in KS3 and 4 History, ones which we hope will engage the interest of all our students.
Year 8 now study ‘Medieval Islamic Empires’ in order to appreciate the way in which Islam has influenced ideas across the world and over the centuries.
Year 9 are currently working on an indepth study of the history of ‘Native Americans’ in order to appreciate what we can learn from ancient cultures before they are overpowered by modern technology.
Year 10 have now started a new GCSE History course which promises to be exciting and challenging! Instead of war and politics in the C20th, we are now covering much broader topics across time. We study the history of ‘Medicine through Time’ (from Ancient Egypt through to Medieval Islamic Baghdad and on into C21st Britain), and the ‘American West’ (Cowboys and Indians in the C19th). We have two new courseworks! The first is an archaeological study of Prehistoric Ilkley and we’ll be working closely with the Manor House Museum at Ilkley. Students will have the opportunity to do some fieldwork at one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain, Rombald’s Moor and meet Gavin Edwards, a renowned authority on Prehistoric Ilkley. We have chosen to study political repression in modern China as our second coursework. It’s going to be challenging but very appropriate now that China is holding the Olympic Games in 2008. The games are meant to be a supreme expression of goodwill between all peoples, yet China has much to do to improve their human rights record. So watch this space…
Will our students benefit from the changes that we have made in KS3 & 4? Well the proof will be in the pudding… and it already looks promising! At the end of Year 8, students studied the topic of ‘Slavery’ in History. When they began Year 9 they had the opportunity to express their ideas on the topic through Art. Their historical understanding of the topic and their skill in Art worked beautifully together. Two GHS students, Marjana Miah and Kiran Fiaz (currently in Year 9) won a regional art competition based on the theme of ‘Slavery’. Marjana and Kiran excelled and the History and Art departments are proud of the way in which their ability and achievement have brought success to themselves and GHS!
Well done!!!
So all in all there are lots of changes in the History Department and, we hope you’ll agree
that they already look promising for our students’ future success!
